What to do first when a pipe bursts
Close the main water shutoff. It is often in the basement near where the water line enters, or beside the meter, and it turns clockwise to close. Then open a faucet at the lowest level to drain what is left in the pipes, which also lowers the pressure pushing water out of the break.
Switch off the breaker for any room where water is touching outlets, appliances or a ceiling light, and stay out of standing water if you cannot be sure the power is off. Move rugs and valuables, and call the 24/7 line. Take photos of the damage before you start cleaning, because your insurer will want them.
The first fifteen minutes, in order
Shut the main
Turn the house main valve fully closed. If it is stuck, say so on the phone.
Drain the lines
Open the lowest faucet and a high one to relieve pressure and empty the pipes.
Cut the power where wet
Turn off the affected breakers if you can reach the panel dry. Do not touch it standing in water.
Contain the water
Use buckets, towels and a wet vac for what you can, and protect valuables.
Shut off the water heater
With the supply closed, power or gas to the heater should be off to protect it from running dry.
Call and photograph
Call us, then photograph damage for your insurer.
Pipe burst at 3 a.m.
Call the 24/7 line now. Say where the water is coming from and whether you could close the main.
Frozen pipes: thawing, bursting and repair
Water expands as it freezes, and the pressure builds between the ice blockage and a closed faucet. The pipe usually splits where the ice sits, but you often do not see the leak until it thaws. A frozen pipe that has not yet cracked can be thawed carefully, while a split pipe needs a repair.
If a faucet gives no water in a cold snap, leave it open, shut the main as a precaution, and warm the area with a hair dryer or a space heater placed safely away from anything flammable. Never use an open flame or a torch. If you cannot find the frozen section or see any wet drywall, call us before the pipe thaws on its own.
Where pipes freeze and burst in Easton homes
New England cold snaps from December to February expose the same weak points in house after house.
Exterior walls
Pipes on the cold side of insulation, especially behind kitchen sinks on outside walls, are common freeze spots.
Crawlspaces and basements
Unheated crawlspaces, rim joist areas and pipes near a basement window or vent can drop below freezing.
Hose bibs and garages
An outdoor spigot that was not drained, or lines through an unheated garage, split at the first deep freeze.
Old galvanized pipe
Corroded steel lines in older houses have thin walls and fail under stress that new copper would survive.
Water hammer and pressure spikes
Loose pipes and sudden valve closures stress fittings over years until one gives.
Failed joints and fittings
Not every burst is a freeze. A tired coupling or a soldered joint can fail without any cold at all.
How a burst pipe gets repaired
| Pipe material | Repair method | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | Cut out the split and sweat in a new section, or use a press fitting | Common in postwar houses, repairs are clean when the pipe is dry |
| PEX | Cut out the damaged run and join with crimp or expansion fittings | Tolerates a freeze better but can still fail at fittings |
| Galvanized steel | Replace the section, often with newer pipe and transition fittings | A burst can reveal more weak spots, consider repiping if widespread |
| CPVC or PVC | Cut and replace with fresh pipe and solvent cement | Brittle in the cold, check nearby runs |
After the pipe is fixed: drying, damage and what comes next
Stopping the water is half the job. Wet drywall, insulation and flooring need to dry quickly, often within a day or two, to prevent mold. A water mitigation company and your insurer take over from there, and a plumber's written note on the cause helps your claim.
If a main or service line failed outside the house, see water line repair. If you suspect a slow leak you have not found yet, leak detection locates it without opening walls unnecessarily. We also dispatch to Norton and Mansfield when pipes burst there.
Permits and licensed work in Massachusetts
Repairing a leak in a faucet or valve is exempt from the permit requirement under 248 CMR 3.05. Replacing a section of pipe is not, so a burst pipe repair generally needs a permit pulled by a licensed plumber. In an emergency the regulations allow temporary use once the work is tested, if the inspector is told and inspects by the next working day.
That is another reason to use a licensed professional, not a handyman. You can check any plumber on the state's online license lookup, and the Easton building department can tell you how local inspections are handled.
What affects the cost of burst pipe repair
You get a clear price before work starts. These are the factors the plumber weighs.
What moves the price
Sudden burst pipes are often covered by homeowners insurance, but gradual leaks may not be. Photograph everything and call your insurer early.

According to the Massachusetts plumbing code, 248 CMR 3.05, a licensed plumber may start emergency work and then notify the local plumbing inspector. That is why a burst pipe is handled first and the paperwork follows.
Your insurer has its own guidelines for water damage claims, so photograph everything before you clean up.
Burst pipe questions from Easton homeowners
Yes. We answer 24 hours a day, every weekend and holiday. Close your main shutoff first, then call and describe where the water is coming from.
Usually in the basement where the water line enters, or by the meter. Find it now, before you need it, and label it.
Yes. Keep the thermostat set well above freezing, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls, and consider asking someone to check the house.
Sometimes. If it has not cracked, careful warming can work, but a split pipe needs repair. Never use an open flame.
Sudden bursts are commonly covered, but policies vary. Call your insurer, and keep photos and a plumber's written cause.
